Kentwood Teenager Britney Spears Tops Charts with Debut Album and Single

JANUARY 24, 1999 (New Orleans)--A Kentwood teenager, 17 year old Britney Spears, is on top of both the album and singles charts in the industry journal Billboard, a first for a debut record by a Louisiana artist. "...Baby One More Time" is the title cut from the album which debuts at Number 1 on the January 30 Billboard 200 album charts and has climbed to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts after only a few weeks.

The pop singer got her start at age 8 when she auditioned to be a member of the Mickey Mouse Club television show. She was too young for the show, but was referred to an agent who accepted her as a client. She succeeded in joining the Mickey Mouse Club at age 11 and spent the next two years honing her singing and dancing skills on the popular show which is shot at Disney's studios in Orlando Florida.

She secured the help of two prominent record producers for her chart-topping debut. Eric Foster White, whose past credits include mega-star Whitney Houston, and Swedish producer Max Martin, known for his work with pop stars like Robyn (also a teenager), the Backstreet Boys and Ace of Base. The album was recorded in New Jersey with Foster White and Sweden with Martin.

Spears becomes the first artist in Louisiana history to top both charts with a debut effort while still a teenager. "This is an amazing occurrence," noted Louisiana Music Commission executive director Bernie Cyrus, "Never before has such a young artist from Louisiana become such a big star so suddenly. She's amazingly talented and we expect her to become a major force in the entertainment industry."
